Product Description

Having a strong, healthy marriage isn't always easy. For police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel, it can be grueling. Making the shift from "society guardian" to "family member" can be particularly demanding. FamilyLife understands the rigorous demands that are placed on first-responder marriages and has addressed them in this four-session small group study.

This study is designed to bring couples closer to God, each other, and with other couples, as challenges and successes are shared. You’ll cover topics such as:

  • The unique challenges faced in the "first responder" marriage
  • Handling the extraordinary relationship stress
  • Making marriage a priority
  • Improving communication
  • Forming a bond between you and your spouse
  • Adjusting from a "work" atmosphere to a "family" culture
  • Pursuing a mutual relationship with God

About the Author

Chuck Douglas joined the Oklahoma City Police Department in 1990 and served in Uniform Patrol throughout his career there. He and his wife, Melissa, met in 1991 and married in 1992, not having any idea that God had a specific plan for marriage. Chuck's work on night shift as a police officer added to the normal stress of their marriage, and after just three and a half years, the couple separated with plans to divorce.

With almost no hope for reconciliation, they attended a FamilyLife Weekend to Remember® getaway, and God miraculously restored their marriage. They became actively involved in volunteer ministry using FamilyLife's HomeBuilders Couples Series®, and have shared their testimony on FamilyLife Today® radio broadcasts and continue to do so at speaking events. God used the Douglases' experience to quicken their desire to join FamilyLife full time. They now serve as regional developers for the mid-South United States. Chuck and Melissa have four children.
