Right from the Start, by FamilyLife Today, was a useful resource for parents of young children. This DVD series gave very concrete and specific methods of disciplining for children aged 0-4. It was timely (five 25-minute sessions), direct, and simple. The scope was very specific to the topic (how to discipline your young children). Dennis and Barbara Rainey also gave specific examples from their own home about sensitive topics, such as how they spanked and when they would spank. While many curriculum address spanking to a degree, this was the first curriculum I have viewed that actually discusses the method and circumstances under which they would use spanking. This is very helpful for young parents, even if they choose to do otherwise, because it gives them a concrete standard that they can evaluate and adapt. The first session stressed the importance of parenting your children with the end in mind. It discusses the importance of being intentional about how you raise your children, defining your goals (as a couple) for your children when they are launched as young adults, and beginning to discipline your children as they form their identity, relationships, character, and mission. The second session teaches the Biblical principles that underlie discipline in general. The sinful nature, responsibility of parents, and role of physical punishment and pain are all introduced and founded on Scripture. The third session discusses how to discipline infants (ages 0-1 year old). Discipline begins by setting a schedule to establish your control as the parent and to create a stable environment. It continues with the role of communicating with your baby before you discipline him or her. This conveys your emotions through your tone, it gets the parent in the habit of explaining why he is applying the discipline, and it establishes some basic expectations for the child. This was the first session with very specific examples of behavior (biting while nursing, flipping over on the changing table, resisting a spanking) and how the Raineys dealt with each. The fourth session discussed how to discipline toddlers (ages 2-4). Here, they laid out their policies for 'good spankings', distinguished between behavior and issues of the heart, and other forms of discipline besides spankings. The fifth session was a study on Prv 6.16-19, the list of things God hates. These 7 categories provided a framework for the Raineys to address the reasons why behaviors were wrong. They illustrated how the behavior was symptomatic of a spiritual issue – greed, disrespect, selfishness, and deceit. By connecting this element into their discipline, they showed the importance of inner change and not just outward compliance. Karen and I watched this together and got several suggestions for how we could adjust our discipline to be more consistent and intentional. We talked through how we should respond when Ian resists a spanking, how we could discipline Hannah for her attitude, and what we should begin spanking for (that we weren’t already). It was a helpful, encouraging, and instructive DVD series. The handbook was actually useful, but not necessary. This book was unique in that it was intentionally short (28 pages), again reflecting its attempt to be simple and direct. I would use this resource as a small group material for a young married group, as part of a marriage mentoring program, or for individual review. It is short enough that a couple can complete it in one week, and flexible enough to do over the course of 5 weeks.

Information I wished I would have had when my children were young.
